July 2019 Monthly Communications

Greetings from NMOTA President Robert Hobbs

Greetings NMOTA membership. This is the first of many newsletters to come. You will be receiving these newsletters regularly with information from members of both the Executive and the Full Board. Hopefully, you will find these newsletters informative and useful.

I’d like to welcome Lourdes Marquez, our newly elected Secretary. I’d also like to thank Julie Brunson for stepping into the role of Secretary last fall and completing Mary Hill’s term. Finally, I’d like to congratulate Joanna Cosbey on being elected to continue in her role as Vice President.

What’s NEW?

Based on member feedback, we have drafted a revised set of bylaws to be voted on during our Annual Business meeting in September. Please be sure to review the bylaws here prior to that meeting.

We have established an ad hoc Occupational Justice Committee to address the serious issues at our southern border. If you are interested in participating, please email Nancie Furgang (chair) at occupationaljustice@nmota.org

What’s COMING UP?

Save the date! Our annual conference will be on September 13th and 14th. Registration is now open. Watch your email for a link to receive your reduced member registration rate.

Meet and Greets:

We are coming to YOU! We’d like to coordinate gatherings of OT practitioners around the state and are hoping you can join us (and help us identify the best spots in town!). Here’s our list of upcoming Meet & Greets:

August 5th: Silver City 5:00 pm @ Buckhorn

August 22nd: Deming -- 5:00 pm @ Yoya’s Bar and Grill

September 10th: Anthony area -- Location TBD

If you can help set up the Lovington/Hobbs, Anthony, and/or Deming events, please email nmota@nmota.org We need help identifying a location and getting the word out.

HOW Do I Stay Connected?

Stay connected through our new website, our newsletters, and our facebook group. If you haven’t been to the new website yet, you’ll need to create a new login to access the “Members Only” section (even if you previously had access to the old website). This is a free benefit to NMOTA members. You’ll find discussion forums, our event calendar, and more in the “Members Only” section.

Want more out of our website or communications? Have content suggestions or stories to share with your fellow NMOTA members? Send us your ideas! Email them to nmota@nmota.org

Do you have a colleague who is doing something interesting or amazing? We’d love to spotlight them on our website! Please send their contact information to communications@nmota.org

Get involved! We have committees working on legislative issues, expanding and supporting membership, developing CEU opportunities, preparing for our annual conference, addressing social justice issues, and more. Email nmota@nmota.org with your interests and we will get you connected to the right committee!

What Has NMOTA Been Doing?

Your NMOTA Board has been working to make your membership money work for you. We have updated our website, engaged in rural outreach, revised bylaws, and more.

We have also been very busy preparing for our annual conference (September 13 and 14). We have an amazing line-up of speakers and hope to see you there! Be sure to bring a friend or colleague -- the more, the merrier.

In addition, we are partnering with neighboring states as part of a regional OT conference being held March 7 and 8, 2020 in Las Vegas. It’s an exciting opportunity to network with OT practitioners in the region. Click here for more information and to submit a proposal. #2020WROTSS

Your NMOTA Board meets every other month as a Full Board (including all committee chairs), with the other months reserved for Executive Board meetings (President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer). Members are always welcome to attend the Full Board meetings. Because of the Annual Business Meeting that will be held at our annual conference, we won’t be having a regular Board meeting in September. Our upcoming meetings are scheduled at 6:00 pm on October 7 and December 2 (location TBD). Please email nmota@nmota.org if you’d like to attend the meeting (in person or virtually) so we can be sure that you have the information you need (e.g., location, call-in information, etc.). Click here to view our approved Board Meeting Minutes from May 15, 2019.

Other Important Business

Due to security issues with Paypal payment service reported at the 2018 NMOTA business meeting, NMOTA has ended our Paypal account. If you set up automatic payment of your membership fees in the past, please go into your Paypal account and end the recurring payments. If Paypal tries to pay NMOTA through automated recurring payments, it will do so for 30 days, then (as NMOTA no longer has a Paypal account), Paypal will remit the funds back to you.

NMOTA now works with Stripe, and you can access that payment system through our website at: https://www.nmota.org/join-1 . Please use that link to renew your membership.

Your membership is valued by the Association and helps us fund our Legislative efforts, OT community meet-ups throughout New Mexico in 2018, and our Continuing Education efforts. Your membership helps us reach our mission of articulating the distinct value of occupational therapy in achieving and maintaining quality of life through occupations that promote recovery, rehabilitation, and health.

Thank you for your understanding as we navigate the complex system of electronic payments. The steps we have taken are to ensure member funds are secure.
